Situation
Garage door manufacturers were in need of a full-service supplier to produce a variety of products for their various garage door lines.
Challenge
The variety of products needed by garage door manufacturers required consistently high performance, despite varying weather, sunlight, and other environmental conditions. In addition, attractive appearance qualities were essential, as the manufacturers hoped to aid homeowners in increasing their home’s curb appeal.
The product lines, which included Carriage Style Overlays, Window Frames and other, were presented to the Formtech Engineering Team. The following concerns were considered:
- Multiple material extrusion would be needed to produce functional products. This required the supplier to have competencies in building multiple tools, extruding various materials, and manufacturing and delivering numerous products.
- Consistent quality and plastic color matching abilities were essential, especially for the Carriage House Style Doors, which were to represent high-end products that would enhance the curb appeal of a home.
- Especially in peak demand seasons, reliable lead-times, on-time delivery, and customer service were essential.

- Formtech’s ability to run multiple materials fit the needs of this market. Our competency with rigid and flexible PVC, various cap stocks, and wood filled composites marked only a few of our material capabilities that were crucial to this industry. In addition, our engineers could design and produce the tools needed in our in-house tool and die department, allowing for quicker lead times and lower tooling costs.
- Special features including support legs on the Carriage Style Overlays and a patented screw guide in the window frames ensured rigidity and structural integrity, while well-trained operators and ISO-compliant procedures guaranteed the quality of the parts. In addition, decorative edges on overlays, custom embossing patterns and multiple frame colors enhanced the aesthetic qualities of the parts.
- With in-house warehouses in each location, Formtech had the ability to inventory products for quick delivery to its customers, no matter what season.

- Carriage Style Overlays: Formtech designed and produced custom and proprietary overlays that withstood varying environmental conditions due to their high heat deflection and low COE. Decorative edges and custom plastic embossing & plastic texturing patterns on the overlay surface helped to enhance the garage door’s curb appeal.
- Window Frames: With their in-house tool & die department, Formtech’s engineers were able to design tooling to produce unique exterior and interior window frames.
