Nearly 50 Years of Extrusion Expertise

Formtech Enterprises, Inc. was founded in May 1970 in Akron, Ohio.  The company produced foam PVC moldings and custom plastic extrusions.  Formtech helped companies solve product and manufacturing challenges.

In the early 1970s, Formtech attempted co-extrusion (or extruding two materials into a single product).  For example, Formtech could extrude materials like rigid and flexible PVC into one shape.  This process could improve the product’s use, appearance, or cost.  Several markets, including energy conservation, saw a benefit from this exciting development.  Formtech also entered other markets in the 1970s, including office furniture and windows and doors.

In 1981, the company moved to a larger plant in nearby Stow, Ohio.  Here, Formtech continued developing new skills. The company began manufacturing with twin-screw extruders, which provided for higher output. In addition, Formtech began producing with wood plastic composite materials.

Expanding for Our Customers

As the geographical base of Formtech’s customers expanded, Formtech expanded, too.  In 1988, Formtech opened a new facility near Athens, Georgia, about 60 miles northeast of Atlanta.  This plant manufactured custom plastic extrusions more effectively for customers in the south.  Like the Stow plant, the Athens plant focused on twin-screw technologies and materials like wood plastic composites and PVC.  This plant also developed new innovations. Some exciting developments included extruding four materials into one product, developing large plastic shapes, and performing complex fabrication.

In the 1990s and early 2000s, Formtech made several acquisitions. For example, Formtech acquired the Yates Company, located in Erie, PA.  Through this acquisition, Formtech gained an expertise in extruding clear plastic profiles with exceptional clarity.  Companies in the electrical and retail display industry use these clear products.  In addition, this plant extruded materials such as polyethylene, polycarbonate, and polystyrene.

In 2006, Formtech moved from Erie to a new plant in nearby Fairview, Pennsylvania.  This plant, located off interstate 90, provided quick access to nearby cities like Cleveland, OH, Buffalo, NY and Pittsburgh, PA.
