We have some great news to share with you! One of the leading plastics related publications, Plastics Machinery Magazine, just published a feature article in their October issue about Formtech Enterprises and our unique WPC (wood plastic composite) extrusion capabilities.
By listening to the market, we understood there was both a need and an opportunity for paintable/stainable WPC products that can be used to provide the natural look of wood with the performance of vinyl. Formtech has a history of focusing on technology differentiates our company for the future, based on our strengths in specific technologies and markets, and keeping current and prospective customers aware of our capabilities. We took the opportunity to explain to Angie DeRosa (managing editor at Plastics Machinery Magazine) our ability to provide custom profile extrusions from a proprietary wood plastic composite (WPC) compound that can be stained to enhance aesthetics. Our WPC formulations are chosen in many cases for improved stiffness over a traditional material, or for the reduction in expansion and contraction due to temperature change. The ability to add aesthetics with performance improvement brings a new dimension to the advantages of this tooling and material technology.
This picture is an illustration of the WPC technology in actual use, showing samples of a stainable surface.
The sample to the far right of the picture is an as extruded, PVC based WPC product that is actually tri-extruded. You can see the flexible fins on the right and left hand side of the product, which are used as sealing legs in this application. Although not shown on the picture, the surface on the opposite side of the hollow profile is capped with a weatherable, dark color for exterior UV exposure between glass panes.
We emboss this product in line, and the beauty of the proprietary WPC formulation and tooling is that it readily accepts gel stains used for wood and fiberglass doors, windows, office furniture and other markets. The four samples to the left of the plain product are the same profile with walnut, mahogany, honey oak and cherry wood stains applied. This is not a printed pattern, and it not profile wrapped with a vinyl coating. It has the look and feel of real wood, with the advantages a custom profile extrusion offers.

We would welcome the opportunity to discuss this capability in more detail, and to discuss any potential applications. In the meantime, how do you want your extrusion?
